ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL COURSES

Many medical practitioners resort to unconventional modes of treatment while healing wounds or treating diseases. The practices such as homeopathy, chiropractic, osteopathy, naturopathy or faith healing come under the broad category of alternative medicine. Certain practices of alternative medicine have been absorbed into the conventional practices and are known as complementary medicine, e.g. Acupuncture. Today, there a number of institutes that offers Alternative medicine courses.

India is a place where many alternative system of healthcare such as Ayurveda, Sidhha, and Unani had its origin. Legal recognition for a particular kind of alternative medicine varies from place to place, though in India the above mentioned practices along with homeopathy are recognized. However, naturopathy is in the process of being recognized as it is being taught in many universities.


QUALIFICATION
There are several institutions across the country which provides courses in alternative medicines. There are mainly four kinds of courses offered and the requirements for those courses are given below:

The diploma courses in alternative medicine are of two years duration. It requires a candidate to have passed class X.

The courses of Bachelor Certificate in Alternative Medicines have is of two years duration and require the candidate to have passed class XII.

The Post Graduate degree Course is of 1 year duration and requires the candidate to be a M.B.B.S., B.H.M.S., D.M.S., D.H.M.S. or Medical Graduate from a recognized universities.

A Ph.D degree on alternative medicines can also be pursued once the post -graduation is completed.


BENEFITS
Allopathic medicines and treatments though reigning supreme still now, has a fair share of its disadvantages, whereas Alternative Medicines have no proven side effects.


This kind of treatment aims towards achieving a higher standard of health and concentrates on the emotional and psychological health of a patient besides his physical condition. This is making more and more people switch over to alternative medicines. It is thus beneficial for students of alternative medicines to pursue the courses in this field of study seriously.


SCOPE IN INDIA
India, being the birthplace of several alternative medicinal practices, provides huge scope for students. A separate national policy has been formed by the government keeping in mind the potential of this field of study. Both central and state governments and NGOs employ bachelor and PG degree holders at different levels. Pharmaceutical companies such as Dabur, Hamdard, Himalaya employ these professionals. With the growth in this industry there is an increasing scope of enjoying a successful career in this field.


SCOPE ABROAD
The growing popularity of alternative medicine is not restricted to India only. Both European as well as American countries are shifting towards the holistic treatments offered by alternative medicines. The craze for Yoga and Ayurveda have increased manifold in the past decade. This is a good sign for practitioners as the scope of earning is more in the western countries. Even countries like Uruguay, Malayasia and others are looking for professionals in this field of alternative medicine. Thus, the prospect abroad for those pursuing a career in alternative medicine is quite promising.




HOMEOPATHY

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which is practiced on the principle, that a drug and a disease which produce similar symptoms cancel each other out in some way thereby restoring the patients to health. The principle of 'Like can cure Like' forms the basis of Homeopathy. It is named after the Greek words, ' Homeo' meaning similar and 'Pathos' meaning suffering or treatment by the same. This system of healing was founded by a German doctor, Samuel Christian Hahnemann (1755) and is recognised as an effective means of treating diseases. Though this system was developed abroad, it has become an integral part of the Indian way of life. There are many institutes imparting Homeopathy courses in India.


QUALIFICATION

Eligibility for bachelor course i.e. BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery) is 10+2 in physics, chemistry, Biology and English with minimum 45 % marks. The duration of the course is five and half years, including internship. There is also a Diploma course of four year duration. At post graduate level, there is MD in Homeopathy which is of three years duration.
Selection of BHMS is through the same All India Entrance Examination as for MBBS. (Details in Entrance Details & Syllabus). The qualification required for entrance is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects. In the case of private medical colleges entrance examinations are conducted by the institutes individually.
They can find employment in Government and private hospitals or clinics, charitable institutions, research institutes as researchers, medical colleges and training institutes as teachers etc. Another option to do private practice.


Course Details

Homoeopathy education is offered at first degree and postgraduate degree levels. The first degree course leading to Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) is available in 118 colleges affiliated to various universities. The entry requirement is a pass in 10+2 examination in science with Biology as an optional. Like any other course in medicine, the duration is five and a half years including one year of compulsory internship. Seats to BHMS course in various universities are filled up through an All-India Entrance Examination. The postgraduate course in Homoeopathy MD (Homy) is of three year duration. The eligibility requirement for MD (Homy) is BHMS degree. National Institute of Homoeopathy, Calcutta was established by the Government of India as a model institute to provide a high standard of teaching, training and research in all aspects of Homoeopathic system.


COURSE OF STUDY

Graded Degree Course :
(1) The Degree Course of B.H.M.S. (Graded Degree) shall comprise a course of study consisting of the Curriculum and Syllabus provided in these regulations, spread over a period of two years including Compulsory Internship of six months' duration after passing the final Degree examination.
(2) The Internship shall be undertaken at the Hospital attached to the Homoeopathic College and incases where such Hospital can not accommodate all of its students for internship such students may undertake Internship in a Homoeopathi Hospital or Dispensary run by the Central Government or State Government or local bodies.
(3) At the completion of the Internship of the specified period and on the recommendation of the head of the institution where Internship was undertaken, the concerned Board or University, as the case may be shall issue the degree to the successful candidate.


WHAT IS TAUGHT?
The subjects that are taught to students in BHMS course are Homeopathy philospohy, Materia Medica, Repertory, Pharmacy and all other subjects that are taught in MBBS like Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology, Pathology, Microbiology, Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Gyne, Obs, PSM, Surgery, Medicine, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Psychology etc.


CAREER PROSPECTS

There are many job opportunities both in India and abroad. A homoeopathic practitioner can get employment as medical officer/doctor at government and private homoeopathic hospitals. One can also start his/ her own practice or open ones own retail shop of homoeopathy medicines. Homoeopathic doctors can work industries engaged in homoeopathic preparations. He can also work as Professor in homoeopathic colleges or do research. A BHMS degree holder can also open up his own pharmacy after some years of experience.

Unani is an ancient Greek medical system. Originated in Greece, it is also known as “hikmat” or Unani Tibb Medicine. The Unani medicine, which has been practiced for almost 6000 years, is based on the principles of Hippocratic theory of the Four Humours - blood in human body, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. Unani is considered as close to Ayurveda medicine of India, because both these medicines are based on the theory of 'the presence of elements' - fire, water, earth and air. Due to the popularity of Unani as one of the alternate medical systems, people in India have opted for building career in this field. A number of colleges are imparting quality education in the field of Unani through undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Research work is also being done in this medical system.

QUALIFICATION

Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery (BUMS) is the undergraduate level course offered by many medical colleges in India. Out of the medical colleges in India, many are standalone Unani institutions, while other have included Unani medicine in their curriculum. To be eligible to pursue the course, one must have passed Intermediate / Higher Secondary Certificate Examination or its equivalent with minimum 50% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, from any recognized Institute or University. Those who have studied Urdu as a language in their 10+2 examination are given preference.

To be a successful practitioner in unani medicine one must have strong power of concentration, self confidence, good communication, a personality that inspires trust, ability to be a good listener, caring nature, patience, and a willingness to work hard.


CAREER PROSPECTS

After pursuing course in the field of Unani medicine, one can work as Unani Hakim or pharmacist. One can also join any central Government or state Government dispensaries, Unani hospitals, health centers, private nursing homes, Unani pharmacies, research centers or can join teaching department at any Unani institute or practice Unani medicine as Unani physician or consultant.


REMUNERATION

Remuneration in Unani medicine largely depends upon the standard of the organizations and the person experience in the field. Generally, in Unani medicine, one can earn anywhere between Rs 3,00,000 and 4,00,000 per annum.

AYURVEDA

The duration of the Bachelor programme i.e. BAMS- Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (Ayurvedacharya) is five and half years including six months of internship. For Post graduate study, 'Ayurvedachaspati', the period of study is three years. Ph.D is also awarded in Ayurveda (Ayurvedavidyavariddhi) which is of two years duration.

A BAMS degree holder can also open up his own pharmacy after experience of 1-2 yrs of production in a reputed firm. Only after that you can apply for a drug manufacturing license. Another option is to work as a research scientist for multinational companies with a minimum experience of 3 years in clinical research and laboratory research.
