There is great scope for medicine as a professional career.
A doctor's profession involves a lot of hard work and at the same time, it gives the satisfaction of curing patients at times even saving lives। It is a very demanding profession. The increasing complicated lifestyles giving birth to a variety of ailments have made it impossible for General Physicians with an MBBS degree to handle all ailments. It is here that specialisation in a particular branch of medicine becomes a necessity. The major Specialisations include General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), Psychiatry, Anesthesiology etc. There is also Super Specialisations which require a further 3-5 years of study in areas such as Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery , Cardio-thoracic surgery, Conito-urinary surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Clinical Haematology.
The demand for medical professionals are tremendously increasing with the unfortunate upsurge of diseases and ailments day by day. At the same time super specialty hospitals are mushrooming both within the country and abroad offering employment opportunities. These along with liberalization of economy could bring better opportunities for these professionals in terms of remuneration, research and working facilities.

Medicine is all about a person getting or seeking treatment from a physician for certain ailments. Once you have decided you want to go in for medicine, you can pretty much stop calling your life your own. It is then dedicated to curing the ailing and the infirm. There’s not only lot of hard work in terms of studying and working as a doctor but also keeping up to date with the recent developments in order to provide the best cure to your patients. QUALIFICATION
The basic or degree level qualification for a medical profession is MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine And Bachelor Of Surgery) which is of 5 1/2 years duration (including 1 year internship). Selection for MBBS is through an All India Entrance Examination. (Details in Entrance Details & Syllabus). The qualification required for entrance is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects. In the case of private medical colleges entrance examinations are conducted by the institutes individually. In addition to MBBS, candidate should complete House Surgery or internship for one year.

The course content includes anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, general medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, ENT (ear, nose and throat), gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatrics, orthopaedics and preventive and social medicine.
After MBBS, candidates can go for post graduate level studies (MD or MS) through another entrance. At the post graduate level, there is specialisation in Medicine and Surgery. Post Graduate Programmes (MD or MS) is usually of 3 years duration. The major Specialisations include General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), Psychiatry, Anesthesiology etc.
Those with Post Graduation (MD or MS or M.Sc in Medicine) can further opt for super-specialisation. i.e. they can go for Ph.D in any specialised area of medicine. MD or MS holders can complete the Doctoral Programme (Ph.D) in 2 years and M.Sc Medicine holders in 3 years.
For practicing as a physician or surgeon , one needs to have completed the MBBS course from a recognised medical college and must possess a license from the State Medical Council to practice.


PERSONAL SKILLS
As a doctor you have the skill to save a person’s life. You can be as attached to the patient as you would be to your dear life or be completely detached to take a rational decision at the time of crisis. Anything that works for you, to be an efficient and a responsible doctor. The only driving force for you should be the commitment to heal and if your knowledge is not sufficient to treat a patient and his ailment, then have a heart to surrender. As doctors have to live with constant pressure a lot of in depth knowledge, reading and research and experience counts at the time of crisis. Studies for a doctor never end as he has to keep himself abreast with changing technology and medicines. Last but not the least to be successful you need to be empathetic with the ailing patients and their family as a smiling doctor cures faster than a frowning one.

WHAT IS TAUGHT?
The course of study is evenly divided into all the semesters. The candidate has to study different subjects in different semesters. In the first and the second semester, which is in the Pre clinacal phase, the subjects taught are Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology. The Para clinical phase is from third semester to fifth semester. In the Para clinical phase, subjects such as Community medicine, Forensic medicine, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology are taught. Clinical posting in wards and OPDs begin from this phase. The clinical phase starts from sixth semester and ends up in the ninth semester. The subjects taught in this phase are Community Medicine, Medicine and Allied subjects (Psychiatry, Dermatology etc.) , Surgery and allied subjects ( Anesthesiology, E.N.T, Orthopedics, etc. ), Gynecology, Pediatrics etc. Clinical postings are also offered in the Clinical phase.
There are three professional exams that are conducted in the MBBS study. The first exam is held after the second semester. The second exam is organized after the end of the fifth semester and the last professional exam is taken after the ninth semester.
The internship duration is of one year which includes posting in various departments like Medicine, Surgery, Casual, pediatrics, Ophthalmology, etc.

IS IT EXPENSIVE?
Medical college education can be very expensive as there are many years that you have to invest in. It also depends on the college you have secured admission into. Govt. aided colleges are much more reasonable than the private ones. It’s also easier to get an educational loan for medical studies once you have secured admission.

EDUCATION LOANS
An education loan is a form of financial support from any bank or financial institution that enable a student for taking higher education. Availability of the education loan, at the appropriate time will help millions of deserving bright young Indians to achieve their dreams come true. All graduation, post-graduation and professional courses from institutes approved by the state and central government and also from foreign universities are eligible for a loan. Several institutes/ colleges have tied up with various banks, for the benefit of prospective students. For studies in India one can get loans up to Rs.7.5 lakh and up to Rs. 15 lakh for studies abroad.

Before giving the loan, banks study the viability of the borrower based on personal discussions with the student, family's assets and annual income, the nature of the course and reputation of the institute. In most banks for loans up to Rs. 4 lakh no collateral or margin is required and the interest rate will not exceed the Prime Lending Rates (PLR). For loans above Rs. 4 lakh the interest rate will be PLR plus 1 percent. PLR is a term used to refer the interest rate of the bank and it may vary with each bank.Some banks offer lower rates to women students or those from specified institutions.Security to the loan depends on the amount. Security is some form of investment (i.e bank deposits, house property etc) that are surrendered to the bank while taking the loan. Security is not needed for loan amounts up to Rs. 4 lakhs. Instead of security, some bank may ask for a third party guarantee ( guarantor) for higher loan amounts. There is no need to repay the loan while studying. The repayment starts after you have finished the course or started working. The repayment cannot be delayed for years after the completion of course. The loans are to be repaid over a period of 5 to 7 years with provision of grace period of one year after completion of studies.

ENTRANCE EXAMS
Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences(AIMS) conducts an entrance test for admission to its under-graduate medical courses like MBBS, BDS & B.A.M.S. For all courses a common entrance exam is conducted. Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences was established in 1998 and was inaugurated by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The entrace test is conducted in a number of centers across the country.

QUALIFICATION
A candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry & Biology with atleast 60% marks in these subjects taken together and 60% marks in English. Those who are appearing for class 12th exams can also apply.
Also a candidate should have attained the age of 17 years but not more than 23 years.
